This is a database for epileptic dalmatians with pedigree. We researches the origin of epilepsy in Dalmatians.
For this, need the help of every Dalmatian owner who has an epileptic with ancestry at his side.
What is the aim of this database? At first it‘s important for us that the dalmatian owner in future can
investigate for themselves whether the original epileptics are present in their puppy. Furthermore, it is also very
important for breeders to understand whether their future stud dogs could possibly be affected.
Unfortunately, we have to report that only a handful of breeders of the FCI are aware of this problem. The most breeders still rigorously
deny that these ancestors are to blame for the spread of epilepsy in dalmatians. Maybe it could be, that will be one or two
dalmatians who do not have these ancestors in their pedigree, but the percentage of those is more than just
small. The original epileptics descend from certain ancestors who are found in ALL epileptics and possible
epilepsy inheritors.
Unfortunately, it has not yet been possible to determine whether epilepsy must be inherited from just one or actually
both parents in order to appear in the offspring.
However, has found to this time, both parents always carry at least the ancestors of the original epileptics.
Also, some pedigrees of the affected epileptics look very good even up to the 5th or 6th generation. Absolutely
impossible to recognize for the layperson and difficult even for experienced breeders. We can see, that it is not enough
to push epileptics past the 5th generation in order to obtain epilepsy-free offspring. Some epileptics have their original
epileptics or their ancestors far away in the 8th or 9th generation.
So it is not true that the ancestors are harmless for the descendants if the epileptics are far away in the pedigree.
